31

31-0 is an impressive season, especially if that’s how a team is ending their regular season.  If you don’t know which team I’m talking about I’m going to just go ahead and say what I’m thinking: you’re hiding underneath a rock!

Wichita State University played their last regular season game on Saturday on their home court in Charles Koch arena.  That alone is very exciting because it means that tournament games are getting ready to start up for the famous March Madness that inflicts all college basketball fans.  What is so fantastic about this game on Saturday was that WSU came onto their court not only with a sold out house but with 30 out of 30 wins.

Since I live with my parents right now I have very little control over the big screen.  If I want to watch something that is on without having to constantly ask my dad to please turn it back I have to deal with the small fuzzy screen in my parents’ room where I have to sit on the edge of the bed to get a good view at the screen.  Any and all basketball games I watch in their room because I’m notorious for being extremely loud during a game, especially in the second half.  On Saturday though, three humans and four dogs surrounded the big screen.

My Ma doesn’t mind watching basketball with me, as long as I tone down the yelling.  My dad has never really taken to watching the sport at all so I was super surprised while I was taking over the kitchen table with my laptop and history books that he wanted to watch the game.  Naturally, as soon as he said it I found the channel WSU was playing on and told my dad that he could not weasel his way out of this game since he brought up.

I’ve been slacking on watching basketball this season, but I have been reading most of the news articles and with being so close to living in Wichita already it’s extremely difficult to not know about the Shockers and their amazing season.  The historic game against Missouri State is actually the first game I have watched from tip off until the last buzzer and believe me, I am so glad I got to see it go down.

Watching as the Shockers scored three pointers after three pointers in the first fifteen minutes of the game I couldn’t get over how much the team has changed since last year.  My dad was getting into the game and was even aware of which players where which.  Even my Ma made conversation with me about the games we had watched last season.  Overall, watching the Shockers pull out another win that would make them go down in history was just an amazing thing.  It wasn’t too much different from watching any other game because it comes down to one thing: basketball is basketball.

I do have to mention that I will forever support the KU Jayhawks as my first choice when it comes to collegiate sports.  I have high hopes for them as they enter into the tournament games but my eyes are also glued to the WSU Shockers because of how well have been doing and because I feel some sort of obligation to keep my eyes on them because I practically live in Wichita.

I’m going to spare anyone reading this with statistics, news articles and my in depth opinions of why WSU is a force to be reckoned with during tournament games.  Instead I will say this: as a Kansan I will support any of our teams because they get to represent us.  I wish for only good things for our teams and hope that they go farther than last year.

Do you watch college basketball? If you do, who do you root for?
